Cycle, Period and Ovulation

In 1933 Japanese scientist Ogyno and Vietnamese gynecologist Knaus proved that a woman is fertile only for a short time during her menstrual cycle. Today we know that the fertile time is about 100 hours during the ovulation.

Another fact is that mature sperm can live up to 5 days and you can become pregnant if you have intercourse a couple of days before you ovulate.

We should take into consideration the fact that the process of ovulation is nervous-hormonally regulated with the active participation of the nervous system, hypothesis and ovaries which means it is hard to determine it with very high accuracy. Your ovulation days may vary depending on your mode and psychological conditions.

By keeping accurate records, a woman can now better identify the fertile and infertile phases of her cycle. Here are several methods for determining the days during which the probability for conception is the biggest.

1.Method of Knaus
It is necessary to find out the shortest and the longest menstrual cycle for the last 12 months. From the shortest one (reckoned from the first day of the menstruation) deduct 17 days (15+2). From the longest menstrual cycle deduct 13 days (15-2).

Example A: (Woman with normal menstrual cycle)
For the shortest one, we register 10.
For the longest one, we register 18.
Result: from the 10th to 18th day of the period (considered from the start of bleeding) the conception is very probable.

Example B: (woman with short menstrual cycle)
Shortest menstrual cycle 21 days, we register 4
Longest menstrual cycle 24 days, we register 11
Result: From the fourth day of the period (which means probably while there is still bleeding) until 11th day the conception is probable.

Example C: (woman with long menstrual cycle)
Shortest menstrual cycle 32 days, we register 15
Longest menstrual cycle 37 days, we register 24
Result: from the 15th day to 24th day of the period (which means long time after the middle of the period) the conception is probable.

Example D: (woman with irregular menstrual cycle)
Shortest menstrual cycle 20 days, we register 3
Longest menstrual cycle 40 days, we register 27
Result: From the 3d day until 27th day of the menstrual cycle the conception is probable.

2. Method of Ogyno
For the last twelve months the longest and the shortest menstrual cycles should be found out. From the shortest (reckoned from the first day of menstruation) deduct 18 days. From the longest period of the menstruation deduct 11 days.

Example: Use the same data from the method of Knaus.

3.Method of calculation
This method uses the following scheme of calculation. We take the length of the cycle and divide it in two. The received number is the beginning date of the range. We add 6 to the beginning date and receive the end date of the range. The received range is longer but during it there is obligatory a process of ovulation and respectively the probability for conceiving (becoming pregnant) is very big. The method of calculation is applicable to women with different of menstruation cycle which makes the method more universal.

Example: Duration of the menstrual cycle 28 days.
Beginning of the range 28/2 = 14 (14th day from the start of bleeding)
End of the range 14+6 = 20 (20th day from the start of bleeding)
Result: The risky period for conception is between the 14th and the 20th day.

4.Temperature method
The method is based on the physiology of menstruation cycle. We can determine with better accuracy the moment of ovulation by measuring of the basal temperature. As a result of the action of progesterone in the second half of the menstruation cycle the morning temperature of woman is with about 0.5 C to 0.8 C higher than the temperature during the first half of the cycle. In the course of one year the woman measures her temperature in the anus for five minutes. The measuring should be done before getting up (in bed) at the same conditions and at one and the same time. Special thermometers are sold for this purpose. The morning temperature is entered on squared or millimeter paper with accuracy to 0.1 C and the received points are connected. The conception is very probable on the day of increasing of temperature.

Warning!
These methods are only recommended when:

1. The menstruation cycle of woman is in the normal range (between 26 and 32 days) and it is relatively stable.
2. The woman keeps regularly and permanently her menstruation calendar.
3. Other contraceptives are also taken during the period with great probability for conception.
The above-stated three conditions should be fulfilled at one and the same time.

These methods are not suitable when:

1. There are big differences in the menstruation cycles (8 and more days). In this case the period for conception gets very long and few or actually no safe days are left.
2. As a result of illness, treatment with hormones, nervous instability, stress, changes in the lifestyle or
3. Psychic stress there is strong influence on the normal functions of ovaries and respectively on the period of ovulation.

About the program "Woman"

The program was designed to help you keep accurate records and cycle calendar. You can have visual information and charts about your cycle, ovulation, and possible fertile time. "Woman" uses the Rhythm method for ovulation prediction. The Rhythm method (as well as all other methods known to the moment) does not provide 100% accuracy. It should only be used as guidance in making choices.

Another basic function of the program to help you monitoring your pill-taking process and alarm you when the time comes for your next pill. Of course, women who do not use pills as a birth-control tool, would not have to use that function.

Finally, WOMAN allows you to help your doctor better by providing her with accurate information regarding past events. Just keep good track of everything you find important at the moment.

Cycle view and form

After you star the program you enter the main view. It will show you your last saved cycle.
The cycle bar view displays a cycle with its menstruation and ovulation dates.

The length for your present cycle will show here : perlen.gif (921 bytes)   Based on this length the program will calculate your ovulation.
When starting a new cycle, the projected length is displayed. This is the average length of all past cycles.

Starting a new cycle
To start a new cycle, tap the "Add" button and select the starting date of the cycle. Once you do, the screen will update, the selected date will be displayed at the top, the expected menstruation duration and end date will appear, as well as the projected ovulation data.
The beginning of each new cycle automatically marks the end of the previous one.

Modifying displayed cycle data

  • Enter the number of days in your period here: mlen.gif (1008 bytes)
  • Delete the cycle data from the Cycle History form
